Winter Activities

Ice climbing

Because Bovec is at quite a low altitude the ice in the valley bottom can be somewhat sporadic throughout winter. It is usually possible to find ice in condition between early January and late February within a ten minutes drive from the house. The Koritnica Valley is famous for it’s 100 waterfalls, which draw visitors throughout summer; these falls offer some superb climbing in winter with routes from 30m to 800m.

Cross country skiing

There are a number of cross-country skiing tracks in the valley around Bovec. These are maintained throughout the winter so long as there is sufficient snow on the ground.

Snow shoeing

Snow shoeing is becoming increasing popular around Europe as a winter alternative to skiing. There are numerous suitable paths around the valley and on the surrounding peaks.

Sledging

Although most people think of sledging as a pastime for kids the Slovenians take it somewhat more seriously. When the snow conditions permit, some of the sports agencies in Bovec offer half day or evening trips down the 7km road from the Mangart saddle.

Dog sledding

There is an international mushing school in Tarvisio that offers dog sledding lessons and day trips.
